Another day we went to the local kindergarten to spend time with the kids like singing English songs or drawing animals ! The children come from many villages around, all from Chinese Hmong tribes so they wear incredibly beautiful traditional clothes. We helped with lunchtime, it was amazing to see the kids wait for 120 of them to get their food before eating!

Un autre jour nous sommes allés voir l'école maternelle du coin pour passer du temps avec les enfants, en chantant des chansons en anglais ou dessinant des animaux ! Les enfants viennent de différents village mais appartinnent tous à la tribue chinoise Hmong, ils portent donc de magnifiques vêtements traditionnels. Nous les avons aidés à servir le repas du midi, c'était incroyable de voir les enfants attendre que 120 d'entre eux soient servis avant de manger!

In the afternoon we went visit the high school, where kids wear traditionnal clothes only on Fridays. They are Karen and Hmong people mixed together. Karen traditionnal clothes are very bright and colourful  woven outfits.

Dans l'après-midi nous sommes allés visiter lecollège/ lycée, où les enfants portent des vêtements traditionnels le vendredi. Les jeunes viennent de tribues Karen et Hmong. Les vêtements Karen sont tissés et plein de couleurs vives .

At the end of the day, the students leave school on their own, some of them live in remote villages and go back home riding a bike on their own!

A la fin de la journée les éléves partent tous seuls, certains vivent dans des villages reculés et rentrent tous seuls en moto!!

Part of this project was to show the local population that they can live with the  elphants around. Unfortunately elephants live in the forest, and deforestation is a problem is this part of Thailand where people clear the land to commercially farm vegetables or fruit. We took part in the coffee project which aims at giving coffee trees to the locals so they can make a living our of it and stop cutting trees, because those coffee trees grow under other trees! And we got a blessing from the local Shaman to thank us!

Ce projet visait aussi à montrer à la population locale qu'il est possible de vivre avec des éléphants dans les environs. Malheureusement les éléphants  vivent dans la forêt et la déforestation est un vrai problème dans cette partie de la Thailande où les locaux rasent les forêts pour cultiver comercialement des fruits ou légumes. Nous avons pris part dans le projet café, qui a pour but de donner des caféiers aux locaux pour qu'ils puissent vivre de leur culture et arrêterde couper les arbres, car ces caféiers poussent sous d'autres arbres! Et nous avons été bénis par le Shaman local pour nous remercier!

Then suddendly it was time to say goodbye to our beloved elephants. Those beautiful gentle giants that we got to know individually for a week...it was not easy to leave them and our jungle paradise.

Puis soudainement, ce fut l'heure de dire au revoir à nos éléphants adorés. Ces magnifques et tendres géants que nous avons appris à connaitre individuellement pendant une semaine....ce ne fut pas facile de les laisser eux et notre paradis dans la jungle.

We spent our last two days at the Elephant Nature Park close to Chiang Mai. I knew they rescued elephants but I never knew how  bad they could be treated just for the sake of toursim or log industry. At the park we watched a video about it and then visited this awesome place where abused elephants can live a happier life...sadly it is often too late and they are either psychologically destroyed or have horrible marks of their  previous life (blindness, broken bones etc...)

Nous avons passé les deux derniers à Elephant Nature Park près de Chiang Mai. Je savais qu'ils secouraient les éléphants mais je savais pas à quel point ils pouvaient être maltraités simplement pour le tourisme où  l'exploitation forestière. Au parc nous avons regardé une vidéo  sur ça puis nous avons visité cet endroit fantastique où les éléphants maltraités peuvent avoir une meilleure vie....malheureusement c'est souvent déjà trop tard et ils sont parfois psychologiquement détruits ou portent les séquelles de leur vie d'avant (aveugle, os cassés....)

For the sake of tourism, baby elephants are often taken from their mothers to be beaten into submission with pointy sharp tools, pierced with sharp bull-hooks, while being starved and deprived of sleep for many days. After this they are still abused and in order for people to ride them they will constantly be stabbed under the ears or on the belly with bull-hooks to be controlled... In the logging industry they are beaten to be forced to pull tons of wood all day and cannot be fed properly so they work until they die....

Au nom du tourisme, les bébés éléphants sont souvent séparés de leur mère pour être battus jusqu'à soumission, à l'aide de outils pointus, ils sont percés avec des gros crochets aiguisés, tout en étant affamés et privés de sommeil pendant des jours. Après ça ils sont encore maltraités et pour que les gens puissent les monter et être controlés ils seront constamment poignarder sous les oreilles ou dan le ventre par des crochets...Dans l'industrie forestière ils sont battus pour les forcer à tirer des tonnes de bois toute la journée et ne sont pas nourris correctement, ils travaillent donc jusqu'à en mourir....

Fortunately, Elephant Nature Park, via Save Elephant foundation and Lek Chailert have created this amazing place where they are rescued, healed and taken care of by volunteers . They work with the locals, employing them as mahouts or building houses for them. They also help a lot of other animals like buffaloes or monkeys and have hundreds of cats and dogs. This place is amazing, inspirational and a great way to spend time with elephants while visiting Chiang Mai!

Heureusement, Elephant Nature Park, via Save Elephant foundation et Lek Chailert ont créé cet endroit fantastique où ils sont sauvés, soignés et où des volontaires prennent soin d'eux. Ils travaillent avec les locaux; les employant comme mahouts ou en construisant des maisons pour eux. Ils aident aussi beaucoup d'autres animaux comme des buflles ou des singes et il y a des centaines de chats et chiens. Cet endroit est génial, très inspirant, et une superbe facçon de passer du temps avec des éléphants lors d'une visite à Chiang Mai!
